J3 Contracting is a privately owned wildland firefighting company that began contracting for the government in 2007.  Owners of J3 previously worked for and were trained by the Forest Service.   With the owner’s emphasis on providing both quality reliable equipment and  personnel for each assignment, J3 has become one of the top contracting companies in region 6 and 3.  Currently running 26 engines, employee opportunities for 100+ day season are common making J3 one of the most experienced contractors available.  Safety is also a major concern and thus training is a high priority for us.  We provide our own in-house training sessions for beginners and refresher classes specialized to our growing needs.

Ryan Mathwich started his career in Forestry in 2002 right out of high school when he landed a summer job working alongside Curtis at the Forest Service.  He spent summer’s working for the forest service while going to college.  In 2007, Ryan was offered the opportunity to buy half of a privately contracted engine and share ownership in the Northwest Region 6.  In 2010, he and Curtis purchased a truck together the infamous Engine 01,at the time 01 was a 2010 white Ford type 4 engine.  Ryan at that time had truck 02 & 03 as well.  In late 2011 Ryan met Crystal his wife and they married in 2015.  J3 had 13 trucks and were in the works of stationing their first trucks in the Southwest Region 3 in 2015.  In 2016, Ryan and Crystal had their first son JW followed by Wade (2018), and daughter Waelyn (2020).  Ryan is most often found taking the fire calls, figuring out logistics, and doing the occasional crew swap.  Crystal is the main office lady in Oregon, handling payroll and payments.

Curtis Pumphrey

Curtis began working for the Forest Service as a seasonal in 1998 and was hired full time in 2004 after earning a Forestry degree from Oregon State University.  At the Forest Service, Curtis worked primarily on hand-crews and short squads for initial attack and was a late season fill in on Hot Shot crews.  In 2010, he joined with previous Forest Service co-worker Ryan Mathwich and purchased first type 4 engine, which in 2010 spent 0 days on fire thus showing us the downs of this industry.  In 2011 Curtis married Laura, they now have a son Parker and daughter Delaney.  You might also find Curtis’ brother Scott on fires as an Engine Boss for J3, he worked for the Forest Service from 1995-2020 before joining the contracting side.
Currently, while on fires, Curtis will most likely be doing crew swaps or position holding for incoming Engine Bosses to maximize days for employees.
